From Hollywood to Mytholgy

The Context
The San Luis Salute is a large-format gala with a guest list that included Indian royalty — an audience for whom cultural representation isn't incidental, it's personal. The 2024 theme called for a fusion of Hollywood glamour and Bollywood vibrance, but a straight mashup risked feeling surface-level. The challenge was to honor both traditions with genuine creative investment while delivering the scale and spectacle a 2,000-person event demands.

 
 
 
 

The Approach
Rather than presenting both aesthetics simultaneously, Astarte structured the evening as a narrative arc. The cocktail hour opened in the register of classic Hollywood — swing dancers, burlesque artists, showgirls — establishing a mood of refined glamour before anything else. The transition point was a custom-built, life-size burning Shiva effigy: a deliberate symbolic hinge that marked the shift from one world into another.
From there, the programming moved into a surrealist Bollywood fantasy across three concurrent stages — The Light (Vishnu), The Dark (Kali), and a central stage — each interpreting the source material through a different lens. Performances spanned aerial work, fire sculpture, fire breathing, belly dance with sword, partner acrobatics, tribal fusion, and bodypainted models. Costuming was globally sourced and purpose-built for the concept, including hand-cast prosthetic arms for the Kali and Vishnu characters, executed alongside award-winning makeup artists.

The Outcome
The evening worked because we harnessed the chaos of a festival setting into a curated spectacle. Guests moved through a complete arc rather than a collection of acts — and for a culturally significant audience, the specificity of the production choices signaled genuine respect for the material. The result was an event that our client still refers to as the standard for all future events.
